Apprenticeship Program to Pause for 2019

For many years, the Michigan Traditional Arts Apprenticeship Program has been funded by grants from the National Endowment for the Arts (NEA) and the Michigan Council for Arts and Cultural Affairs (MCACA). Each year the staff of the MSU Museum’s Michigan Traditional Arts Program has submitted applications to these two agencies.

Earlier this year the Michigan Council for Arts and Cultural Affairs imposed new restrictions on grant applications and we were unable to submit an application for funding to them.  Then, this past week, MTAP received word that our grant application to the NEA for the 2019 Michigan Traditional Arts Apprenticeship Program (MTAAP) was not funded.

Without funding from either of these agencies, sadly we will be unable to fund any MTAAP awards this year. For us, our next steps are to resubmit our grant application to NEA . We will also meet with the MCACA leadership about possible support from the state arts council.

Because the Michigan Heritage Awards do not have a cash award, we will accept nominations for those awards for 2019.

If you have any questions or if you have suggestions for other sources of funding for this state program, please do not hesitate to email us at msum.mtap@gmail.com or call (517) 353-5526.
