Sandra Epps

Sandra Epps is an entrepreneur, artist, and community organizer from Detroit who has dedicated her life to increasing representation for women and girls of color. She accomplishes this through publications and art-making activities in a wide range of genres, always connecting her practice back to culture and heritage. She is the founder of Sandy's Land LLC, a Detroit-based publishing house and entertainment service with a powerful mission: to encourage women and girls to "Love the Skin They're In!"

Sandra's personal journey has deeply influenced her dedication to self-love and empowerment. Diagnosed with lupus at a young age, she endured near-death experiences and faced the challenge of relearning basic functions like walking and talking. This experience ignited a passion for helping others find strength and embrace their identities. Her work around increasing representation and self-love especially for Black girls draws from this journey.

In 2011, Epps established the Detroit Doll Show, an event recognized as the largest Black doll show globally. Its mission is to celebrate history, culture, self-love, and diversity through the promotion of dolls of color. Doll making is a long-standing tradition within many Black communities, especially as many commercially produced dolls historically only reflected white skin tones. The Detroit Doll Show features vendors, authors, artists, workshops, and awards, attracting a large audience and fostering a positive and empowering environment.

Beyond Sandy's Land LLC, Epps founded SHE'S Empowered (Sisters Helping Encourage Sisters) in 2010. She also serves as a speaker on topics like systemic lupus erythematosus, building self-esteem in children, and self-publishing. In 2023, she launched the Black Doll Mobile Museum, furthering her efforts to bring Black history and culture to schools and organizations.

Epps' dedication to her community and empowering women and girls was recently recognized with the President’s Lifetime Achievement Award from the President’s VolunteerService in March 2025. This recognizes individuals who have provided over 4,000 hours of volunteer community service.
