Dexter Elmhurst Cultural Resource Project Collection

The Dexter Elmhurst Cultural Resource Project Collection consists of materials derived from a 1999-2000 collaborative project of Michigan State University Museum and the Dexter Elmhurst Community Center to survey the cultural assets of The Dexter Elmhurst Project Area, generally defined as the geographic area bounded by Fenkell and Labelle Avenue (N), Tireman and Webb Avenue (S), Oakwood and Linwood Avenue (E) and Wyoming Avenue (W), in the city of Detroit, Wayne County, Michigan.

Funded by a grant from the Family Independent Agency, the Inventory resulted in collections (audio-taped oral history interviews with 35 people, transcriptions of the interviews, fieldnotes, and ephemera), a Dexter Elmhurst Neighborhood Resource Discovery Workbook, a Cultural Resources report, and a Resources Directory Database. Assets documented include rap music, hip hop, Motown music, gospel music, clothing, foodways, and personal adornment.
