Ongoing community-engaged research is conducted by MTAP staff and contracted fieldworkers throughout the year on a variety of folklife traditions and communities. This material is housed in the Michigan Traditional Arts Program Research Collections at the MSU Museum and is used to inform exhibitions and scholarly work, generate media content, enrich programming, document Michigan's traditional arts communities, and connect artists to the Michigan Traditional Arts Apprenticeship Program and Michigan Heritage Awards.

The research collections are available for on-site use by individuals, special interest groups, college classes, guilds, etc., by appointment only. To schedule an appointment to work with material culture collections or archival material such as audio recordings or fieldwork documentation, contact Lynne Swanson, Cultural Collections Manager by phone at 517.355.3304 or by email at swansonl@msu.edu.
