Ongoing research is conducted by MTAP staff and contracted fieldworkers throughout the year on a variety of folklife traditions and communities. This material is housed in the Michigan Traditional Arts Program Research Collections at the MSU Museum and is used to inform exhibitions and scholarly work, generate media content, enrich festival programming, and connect artists to the Michigan Traditional Arts Apprenticeship Program and Michigan Heritage Awards.

The research collections are available for on-site research by individual researchers, interest groups, college classes, guilds, etc., by appointment only. To schedule an appointment to work with material culture collections or archival material such as audio recordings or fieldwork documentation, contact Lynne Swanson, Collections Manager for Cultural Collections by phone at (517) 355-3304 or by email at swansonl@msu.edu.
